:Here's To A More Intentional 2012:

So I did this last year, too—to a reasonable amount of success. I still have to go back and find my goals and see how well I did as far as meeting them (I'll post them [along with my review on how I did] when I find them!)—but I feel like I can confidently say that it worked FAR better than setting “resolutions” has EVER worked for me in the past.

So, having said that, I have again, for 2012, chosen a major area in life that I want to “re-engage” in. I’ve specifically chosen the word “re-engage” for a couple reasons: first, it implies active involvement that extends beyond the first time doing it. So the point is to continue on with these goals, beyond the initial 30-days. Second, engaging implies that I am already involved in these things—I’m merely setting a goal that’s beyond what I’m currently doing. Third, the idea of engaging means that something is already going on—and I’m stepping in to be a part of it. I found that last year, when I talked about “retaking control” of things, it put the onus on me and my strength, rather than creating this idea of reliance on God to give the strength to follow through on my goals.

As I said, for each month, I’ve chosen a major area of my life. I’ve set three simple goals in each area—ways to re-engage in these areas of life. By doing this, I make these things reachable and measurable (i.e. it’ll be pretty obvious if I am or am not doing them!) Working on these things isn’t JUST confined to that particular month—I may begin working on some of them earlier than the month they are in… but the main focus for each month will be trying to work that goal into my life, with the hope that I will have reached most of them by the end of the year. Here’s to a more intentional 2012!

They say it takes 30 days to make a habit. So the hope is to make each of these things a habit by the end of the year.  Here goes nothing!

JANUARY: To re-engage in my devotional life by:
  • Spending at least 15 minutes a day in scripture
  • Spending at least 15 minutes a day in journaling/engaging
  • Spending at least 15 minutes a day in prayer

FEBRUARY: To re-engage in my marriage by:
  • Dating my wife (either out, or in-house) once a week, unless absolutely impossible (no lame excuses!)
  • Leaving love notes and messages for her each day before I leave for work
  • Creating time and space for her to have time to pursue her loves

MARCH: To re-engage in my family life by:
  • Protecting one day a week as a family day—nothing work-related gets scheduled on these days!
  • Protecting as many evenings as possible by getting work done during work (and morning) hours
  • Intentionally engaging together in playing at least as hard as we work (i.e. taking time to rest, play, hike, camp, whatever)

APRIL: To re-engage in my schedule by:
  • Engaging in these goals
  • Setting a “wake-up” time, and keeping it unless utterly necessary to break it
  • Building healthy routine into my life

MAY: To re-engage in my finances by:
  • Beginning to track things as closely as I did when we first got married (paper trails for everything!)
  • Committing to saying “no” to the credit card unless the money is there (or it’s an absolute emergency)
  • Putting any extras against debt and bills, rather than just allowing it to disappear (i.e. TELLING our money where to go)

JUNE: To re-engage in my health by:
  • Continuing to bike to work whenever possible (which means sometimes doing it when I don’t feel like it!)
  • Spending time exercising as a family (biking, hiking, walking, etc)
  • Making wise food choices, and sticking to them.

JULY: To re-engage in my hobbies by:
  • Blogging/writing at least once a week
  • Carrying a camera and taking photos/video whenever it avails itself
  • Intentionally creating time to complete projects

AUGUST: To re-engage in my work by:
  • Learning to see the joys in whatever work I am currently doing
  • Actively pursuing work options (regardless of how frightened I may be by stepping out!)
  • Continuing to strive to do the best I can at whatever I am doing

SEPTEMBER: To re-engage in my projects by:
  • Spending a half-hour writing at least once a week
  • Spending a half-hour working on a manual project (i.e. building, etc) at least once a week
  • Actively pursing creative ways to supply/fund my projects

OCTOBER: To re-engage in my communication by:
  • Re-connecting with key relationships via letters, etc.
  • Learning to be a better listener
  • Working on a (at least) yearly family newsletter for family/friends

NOVEMBER: To re-engage in my ministry by:
  • Continually seeking out new materials and inspiration
  • Continually seeking out new ways to use my (and others’) time more effectively
  • Continually seeking out new methods to draw new musicians/ministry members in and draw new things out of existing team members

DECEMBER: To re-engage in my neighbourhood by:
  • Learning to be unafraid to just say “hello”
  • Making a point of engaging in conversation, rather than shying away from it
  • Bringing cookies to neighbours (at least 5 houses in either direction) as a way to say “Merry Christmas”.

So that's that. We'll talk again (hopefully throughout, but for sure at the end of the year) and see how this has all gone!

Christmas On A Budget...

So we did Christmas on a budget this year (yes, I see it, and no, I'm not going to get into how off-kilter it seems to say "We did Christmas" in this post)...we had a budget for several reasons.

1. We simply didn't have the money to NOT work with a budget.
2. We were by no means putting Christmas gifts on our credit card.
3. We thought it would be fun.
4. We figured homemade gifts would be WAY cooler.

So now, (spoiler alert!) here's a little slice of our (gift portion) of Christmas, which we did early, since we knew we were going to be busy with our Christmas Eve service on Saturday evening (I'll even intersperse it with photos!).

So our "budget" was to spend as little as possible (we wanted to spend no more than $100...I know less than that IS possible...but I'm sure you all understand that $100 is a SMALL Christmas budget for most people!), and mostly just make or buy things that were practical, meaningful, or long overdue.

So we got a free tree. And instead of buying new Christmas tree balls (the brown ones in the photos, because the blue and green that they used to be didn't match anything, apparently =P), we bought $6 worth of spray paint and painted them. They look great! Between that and the free garlands we borrowed from someone, our decorating budget topped out at $6.

For Maelle, we got around 150-200 duplo blocks from a free ad on castanet. We also bought her a new book (I know, I know, not used...) for $10, a wooden (looks handmade) rocking chair from castanet for $20, and a Little People farm set with 5 animals and a barn for $15. There were also two toy balls (free), a pair of slippers (free), a doggie flashlight ($3) and her bed, which I made her, hardware & all, for $12. However, we sold a few things to offset our costs, and therefore lower the budget. We sold a baker's rack for $20, and some Aquarium stuff for $15 (therefore cancelling out the cost of the rocking chair AND farmyard set). So our total budget for Maelle topped out at $25.

For Milena, I am in the midst of building some end tables for her living room, and some shelves to hang on the wall in our bedroom. I also am working on copying all of her recipes (there's about 60 that need copying onto the cards I bought, on sale, @Michaels) that are on loose sheets of paper onto recipe cards, and was able to give her about 20 completed ones last night ($5). We also bought the new Coldplay CD for her ($14). Milena sold some Epicure stuff to a friend for $10 to offset some of this, so our budget for her topped out at $9.

For myself, Milena is making me a pair of pajama pants out of an old fleece blanket that we had in the house. She also already owns the thread and whatnot, so that's free. She also got me a leather carrying case for my camera and accessories, which she got with leftover change for grocery money at a craft fair a while back. We also bought me the new Hedley CD, for $16, which is where our budget for me tops out.

As far as food and snacks go, we managed to sneak it all into our normal grocery budget by just planning around what we had in the house already. So we were still able to enjoy fancy appies, a shrimp ring,  punch, egg nog, cookies, etc.

This means, all things considered, that we managed to pull it all off for $56. Considering we were shooting for under $100, I think we made it in under budget.

And you know what? It was WAY fun, and WAY cool... and WAY WAY WAY less stressful this way.

Totally shooting for under $50 next year.

:Now:

...Just spent an hour shredding old documents that had piled up on my desk...why is that so freeing--so cleansing? Maybe I'm strange, but it was honestly therapeutic for me. I need to do therapeutic things more often.

...Also re-strung my guitar for the first time in far too long (thanks to a wonderful gift from a friend), and discovered, once again, the tone that made me fall in love with it in the first place. Oh sweet, beautiful Taylor...

...Did I mention that my wife and daughter are the awesomest ever for putting up with me in my depressed state (oh, and if you had no clue I'm wrestling with depression, I'll fill you in some time down the road)? Because they are... and I'm so thankful.

'night.

:Okay to Best-day:

Well, it was "a day" at work today. Not much going on, not much to do, and no prospects of creating work, either. Only thing it had going for it was the game of "31" at lunch with Jon and the Accounting Staff, and the fact that I got off at 3 due to an appointment in the afternoon.

THAT'S where it changed for the better.

The appointment: Family Photos.

The result: Awesome.

It was a good hour with the family, posing, and having photos taken of us. We'll go back next week to take our pick of them. So good.

Then, we topped it all off with a cherry on top... well, actually, raspberries. 10 pounds of them. SO amazing.

AND, as if it couldn't get any better, I had a daddy-daughter date at the grocery store, and got to spoil my little girl, my wife, and myself all in the process. What I wouldn't give for more time with my family.

BUT NOW, it's dinner and bedtime for the little girl, and the following for dinner for Mommy & Daddy:

Asparagus
Yam Fries
Fresh Braided French Bread with locally made Gouda, Honey Maple Turkey, fresh tomatoes, and butter.

Follow that up with a glass of wine and some dark chocolate, and maybe a good flick or TV show, and I'm pretty sure we've got a lineup for the greatest day ever.

Even with the so-so start.

:A Smile:

...It makes me happy that the sun was still trying to be pretty on a rainy day...

12.7.11

First Off...

Well, it's official.

I've decided I DO need to foray back into the world of blogging--my thoughts need their escape.

But I've decided all my blogs will coalesce into this one. No more multiple blogs (goodbye livejournal, xanga, and former blogger account!)...just this one. Less to keep up, less to keep track of.

Less is more.

So here I am. Posting because, for the first time in almost a year, I've written a song.

If you count the one I'm working on with a buddy of mine, there's two from the past year. But seriously, the fact that they've been so few and far between is not a positive commentary on my songwriting...nonetheless, we'll be giving it a shot on Sunday... so we'll see how it goes. I'll share the words with you...

It's nothing terribly profound, but here it is:

You Ask Me

You ask me for my heart, and I’ll give it to you freely
You ask me for my soul, and it’s yours, unreservedly
You ask me for my mind, and my thoughts are yours, my Saviour
My life is yours, my all is yours, take me as I am

I will build my life upon this rock
I will not fall down when storms may toss
I will stand my feet on solid ground
Though the sand may wash away,
My faith will still remain

I will walk the paths that you have walked
I will not fall down when storms may toss
I will do the things that you have done
Though the sand may wash away,
Your truth will still remain

Called to live as you have lived
Called to speak the truth that you have spoken
Called to follow with my life
You have called me, I will answer, you have called me, I will go

So there you have it. Come by on Sunday to hear it, otherwise maybe you'll hear it some other time.
